October is LGBTQ+ History Month!
LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated each October in the United States, a tradition that began in 1994 to honor the legacy, struggles, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals throughout history. Chosen to coincide with National Coming Out Day on 11 October, the month is a powerful time to reflect on the past, celebrate progress, and recognize ongoing work for equity and inclusion.
For the Mildred Berryman Institute, LGBTQ+ History Month is a cornerstone of our mission in uplifting and preserving Utah’s Queer and Trans past. Throughout October, we offer a rich lineup of events and opportunities that connect community with history—our guided Salt Lake City walking tour, the annual LGBTIQ+ Ancestor Memorial, placing of Pride flags at the gravesites of LGBTIQ+ Utahns, and a range of public education resources and programs. Whether you’re looking to learn, reflect, or connect, we invite you to join us in honoring the lives and legacies that have shaped our present.
Join our free, fundraising walking tour on October 5th.
Attend in-person or online our October monthly lecture on October 9th.
We are holding our fourth annual Queer Ancestor Memorial in Bountiful on October 19th.
Help us reach our $1,000 fundraising goal for LGBTQ+ History Month. Donate here! Any amount helps!
