Teach. Gather. Preserve.

The Mildred Berryman Institute for LGBTIQ2S+ Utah History promotes public education and general knowledge of Queer Utah history, culture, and arts in all their diversity by fostering a collegial atmosphere among researchers.

We work to teach and preserve local LGBTIQ+ history by sponsoring lectures and educational events, assisting research, recording oral histories, and preserving physical artifacts.

Connell O’Donovan. "Mildred Berryman: Salt Lake City’s Pioneering Lesbian Sexologist." Mildred Berryman Lecture Series, Mildred Berryman Institute for LGBTIQ+ Utah History (at Signature Books), Thursday 16 January 2025.

Mildred Jessie “Barry” Berryman was a pioneering Lesbian sexologist in Salt Lake City in the 1920s and 1930s, so we named our organization in her honor.

In January 2025, historian and Mildred Berryman Institute founder Connell O’Donovan discussed the life and legacy of Mildred.

We get asked all the time…“Who is Mildred Berryman?”
